December 13th and 14th - Pompeii and Herculaneum

13 of December
Today we went to visit Pompeii. It was amazing to see it in real life. We learnt so much about it that we didn’t know. It was a very wealthy city and was on the water’s edge but because of the eruption more land was made and so it is now further in land. It was interesting to see how many artefacts got saved. There were boxes piled high of them and even then there were still some lying around because there was no room. We bought a book which gave you before and after shots of what it would have looked like. This helped us see where different things were and how things were used and worked. The city was very big and had many streets so it was easy to get lost. It was especially easy with the fact that many of the streets were blocked off from public access. We did find our way in the end. One of my favourite things I learnt about was that in order to clean the streets they flooded them and for people to be able to cross the road without get wet they made stepping stones for them to use. We used these when we were getting around and pretended that the streets were getting flooded. Once we had finished in Pompeii we went to another town which got preserved by the volcano called Herculaneum. This city was much smaller but was better preserved. While Pompeii got hit by a lot of ash and pumice, Herculaneum was hit by a mud slide because it was much closer to Mount Vesuvius. We could even see where the mud had stuck to the metal bars on the windows. We had a short look around there and then went back home and had a well needed rest after all the walking we did.

Today we drove to Rome. It was a long drive so we had some stops on the way. We packed up our house and drove to the coast and because we were in Italy and the Mediterranean Sea was right there we felt obliged to have a swim. It is winter but we really wanted one. So one of our stops was to have a swim. We parked the car and had a long descent down to the beach. Once we got down the beach we found a sheltered spot where we undressed into swimmers. It was quite cold in the water and as another disadvantage there was a cool breeze blowing as well. We gritted out teeth and went in. I was the first to get fully under and after such an experience it was a shame that we forgot to bring towels! We used our T-shirts as a substitute. Once we got back into our clothes we had the grueling walk back to the top. We counted that there were 922 steps give or take a few. We then got into the car and drove to Rome. It wasn’t nice to be in another city but exciting to be in Rome. We unpacked the car and then had to walk for twenty minutes to find our apartment. It wasn’t a pleasant walk because we had to carry everything and had to wear our puffer jackets. This made us sweat a lot. Once we got into the apartment we were all so tired we had dinner (which was pizza) and went to bed.
