December 7th and 8th - Cinque Terre and Pisa

7 of December
Today we had an early start to catch a train at 9:04. We then went to Riomaggiore which is part of the Cinque Terre which in English means 'five towns'. We walked around a quiet town, it was nice to see the locals being around and about. We then walked around to the tiny harbour where the locals keep their boats. We saw a cat and in its mouth there was a fish which it has stolen. The sad thing is that it was still alive wriggling about! We then went back up to the train station where we had a forty five minute wait for the train. Once the train arrived we went to Manaroloa where we had a short look around it was very pretty and had a little harbour as well. We then went back to the train station where we caught a train to Vernazza. This is where we had lunch. It had a beautiful harbour which we had both our lunch and gelato. It was very beautiful and very cultured with the terracotta roofs and sea side views. We then went to another town called Monterosso. This town had a beautiful beach and beautiful houses. We walked along its beach and then went into its old city. There were lots of locals out and we could feel that we were in a true town not something put on for the tourists. We then caught the train back to our apartment for a very traditional Italian fire cooked pizza.

Today we packed up our bags and had a final enjoyment of the view from our balcony. We then walked through some local markets near the apartment. There was some very beautiful leather products and dad bought a coin purse, which he desperately needed. We then hopped in the car and drove to Pisa where we parked and saw the leaning tower of Pisa. It was funny to actually see a tower leaning. We had some fun pretending to push it up. We then went and walked around some of the local markets. Most of the things were of valuables like keys, books and trinkets. We saw a very old lady who looked very ill lying outside a stall. She obviously was going to die. It was very sad but nice because her family was around her and it was a nice sunny day. We then went and saw a stall which was selling sand in a glass but the man was creating pictures with the sand. It was very amazing to watch him do it with such ease. He said that sand making had been in his family for 75 years. Lachy and Josh bought a bottle each it was interesting to learn that the materials weren’t just sand they were all kinds of things like coffee, make-up, corn and graphite. We then went to try and find something to eat. We ended up getting, and I don’t like saying this, but we got McDonald’s because it was the only thing which we knew what to order. So we got some chips and drove to our next apartment. It wasn’t really what we expected and after a long day it became too much for mum. It was cold and even with the heaters on it was cold. We had no Wi-Fi or washing machine and the sink didn’t work. We went out for dinner where we had some pizza. We then went back home for a cold night.
