October 30th - November 1st - Egerton, England

30 of October
Today we woke up very early to pack up our things. After we packed up we had breakfast with our French hosts for the last time. Then we left to catch our ferry to the UK. Once we got to Dunkirk mum and dad got a bit stressed because we couldn’t find the ferry dock. Once we found the dock we had to go through some customs and we found this difficult because everything we needed was in our suitcases. The man was very rude but we didn’t get the worst of it. The people behind us were told that they should be sent back to Belgium! Once we finished with him we went onto our ferry and sat down. Not much happened on the ferry but once we came close to our destination we could see the white cliffs of Dover. These are amazing because they are made out of chalk! We went to our next stop in Egerton. This is where some of dad's friends live and these are the people we stayed with for the next few days. They were called the Lumleys. Dad had stayed with them when he was traveling. Their names were Josh, Angelina, Casper and Ines. They also have a dog called Lola.  Once we arrived we went on a walk around some of their orchards. We also went on a giant swing which the mums didn’t like but was lots of fun. We were allowed to pick fresh apples off the trees and eat them. We then went home and had an amazing dinner of roast chicken. We also met John Lumley (Josh’s dad). He is a very proper man and worked through Christies with paintings by people like Monet and Van Gogh. After a big day we went to bed and fell straight to sleep.

Today was a big day full of things that just took long so there isn’t much to write about. We woke up after a well needed sleep. We went over to John’s house for tea after breakfast. His house is amazing. It looks like it is off a design show. After tea we went to a castle called Dover Castle. It was an 11 century castle but it was also a big part of the second world war. We went in and had a look around. We went to the top and it was so windy. Our hair was going everywhere! Once we had finished there we went into the tunnels. They used in the second world war. It gave you a better understanding of what happened, especially about operation dynamo -the rescue from Dunkirk. This was because after rescuing lots of soldiers they brought them back to the beaches of Dover. After this we went back home and then for dinner we went out to an English pub. It was very nice food and very big portions. After such a big meal we were ready for bed. Once we got home we went straight to sleep.

Today we went to Canterbury. This was where Josh went to school and also it is where a very beautiful cathedral is. The cathedral was right behind Josh's old school so we got a sneaky way in. In the cathedral it was amazing to see such high roofs and such detailed stone and glass work. We finished there and went and had fish and chips for lunch. They were delicious. Once we finished that we walked around and saw some very interesting shops like the firework shop where we bought some for that night! We then went home and had some fun there before it was time to light the bonfire and have the fireworks! The bonfire was in the middle of the woods so as Australians we felt out of our comfort zone. It was amazing to see that even though there were lots of trees over hanging it they didn’t catch on fire. Once it was a good fire we left that and went and light the fireworks. It was amazing to watch real fireworks up close. We then went home and roasted marshmallows on their fire after dinner. It was a very exciting day and after that we needed a good night sleep.
